The training weekend will include 30 hours of instruction and exploration with modules including:
Ballet and Barre Technique with Kalyn and Jillian: Complete review all of the ballet movements that we use in the syllabus and how to teach them. We will dissect each movement until we have a deep familiarity with every component. This deep exploration will give you the tools to pass that knowledge and understanding of the movements on to your students and ensure they can master the movement in their own bodies. We will go over in depth how to work within limitations to master each movement and provide the most accepting and supportive Ballet experience possible.
Syllabus Breakdown with Kalyn and Jillian: Over 30 exercises from the Ballet Beats syllabus will be broken down and mastered. These exercises have been chosen to help you create your best class. This is the program, the movement that we express not only physically but also emotionally. We will help you to master these exercises and create a path to develop the technique in your own body. Through this technique and clarity of movement, you will be able to physically lead a class.
Explanations and Class Flow with Kalyn and Jillian: Learn how to find your flow in class, how to explain while doing. We will work through the many layers of leading a class and truly teaching your students. We believe whole-heartedly that every class should be a conversation that allows for learning and growth for each and every student. This session will speak to multi-tasking, what do you need to say, what should be left alone. Find connections from exercise to exercise. Based on student feedback, information from how the program has progressed, new knowledge and experience, we will take your teaching to the next level.
Mats and Weights Technique: Our guest instructor, Alli George is a 2013 BA Alumni of the University of Calgary Department of Dance. She began her dance training at the age of 10, at Danceworks Dance Academy of Lethbridge. Alli has an Exercise Science diploma from Lethbridge College (2008). She is a Certified Personal Trainer with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP), level 1 coach through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), level 3 Individual Conditioning Trainer through the YMCA, and has completed the level 1 Dance Teacher and Health Professional Intensive through Perfect Form Physiotherapy.
Alli has been trained in many forms of dance including contemporary modern, ballet, jazz, tap, and hip hop. She has been teaching dance since 2005 and personal training since 2007. She spent 2008-2009 training in Graham technique and performing in Toronto with a variety of instructors and choreographers including Daryl Tracy, Johanna Bergfelt, Wendy Chiles, Heidi Strauss, Michael Trent, Kate Stashko, and Sarah Lochhead.
Alli specializes in dance specific training, developing biomechanics breakdowns for safe and efficient movement and ensuring her students have a fundamental understanding of anatomy and biomechanics. With continuing education and professional development in both dance and fitness she progressively expands her knowledge and scope of practice. Her goal is to help dancers develop safe, efficient, and effective movement patterns while maximizing their strength and mobility. She looks forward to expanding her reach to the general population and adult dancers to help them achieve their dance and fitness goals.
Alli will work with all of the basic movements within the Ballet Beats Syllabus done with weights and help you to understand what muscle groups we are working. She will ensure that everyone has a deep understanding of how to do these movements safely and how to maximize the benefits of the movement. This module will give you confidence to instruct classes with weights as well as how to take our alignment and posture principles to the mat.
Anatomy for Dancers and Safe Teaching Practices: We are so excited to bring Hailey McLeod as a guest instructor to this training program. Hailey is a dancer, actor, creator and teacher who has explored many ventures in the arts realm. She pursued dance training in contemporary and jazz styles while earning her Bachelor of Arts, Major in Dance from the University of Calgary in 2014.
She has taught students of all ages in Yellowknife (NT) Shawnigan Lake (BC) and Calgary. She has presented her own choreographic works in Yellowknife (Folk on the Rocks 2012) Calgary (Ignite! 2016) Edmonton (Nextfest 2016) and Helsinki, Finland (artArctica 2016), and has worked as a freelance choreographer for Gravity Dance Company and Trip the Light Youth Company.
Hailey also holds a Masters of Science in Dance Science from the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance (London, UK) and has been a sessional instructor at the University of Calgary, teaching anatomy to dance majors.
Currently, Hailey teaches dance to grade 8/9 students at Calgary Arts Academy, is a teaching assistant at the University of Calgary and choreographs for the dancers of the Stampede Showband. She is also the conference coordinator and a member of Healthy Dancer Canada.
This module will include everything we need to know about basic anatomy and proper posture. You will be able to identify what muscles we are working, how we can tame the muscles we don't want to work and activate the ones we want to. This course will assist in class planning so you can ensure that you are choosing supplementary exercises that create a well-rounded class, not over-using the same muscle groups. We will dive into proper alignment and how to recognize where there is potential for injury. You will be equipped with the tools you need to assist students in their journey through class as safely as possible. We always strive towards injury prevention by guiding every class with intention and clarity of movement.
Voice Workshop for Instructors: Our guest instructor, Allison Smith, is an internationally-known voice talent, who specializes in voicing telephone systems. She is heard around the world on systems for companies like PetSmart. 3M, Toyota, Victoria’s Secret and NASA, to name a few. She is also a life-long yoga practitioner, who has an endless fascination with human speech: how we say what we say.
It became clear to her -- through her years of practicing yoga -- that very little emphasis is put on yoga/fitness teacher's training on the *quality* of the voice -- and that few things can disrupt an otherwise strong teaching paradigm as repetitive, bad speech habits, upspeak, vocal fry, or an artificial "sweeting" or "raising" of the vocal register -- even unconsciously adopting a "character" as you enter the studio to teach.
In this two-hour workshop, Allison will provide a rare look into the most common pitfalls that a lack of mindfulness of the voice can cause in the fitness setting, and what can be done to raise awareness in your own speech patterns and create a better experience for your Barre students – and help preserve your own voice from undue strain. Vocal drills, demonstrations, and group work will be a fun a creative way to drill into your own vocal traits and improve them. Your students will be more engaged; your voice will experience less strain; and your teaching will be enhanced and forever expanded.
We are excited to work on an element that is so key to becoming the best teacher you can be. Your voice. Clarity in your body and the basic strength you need to teach are key but your voice is such an important element. It is so very powerful.
